Brushing and flossing with braces

BRUSHING AND FLOSSING WITH BRACES

At Willis Orthodontics, we’re here to help you maintain excellent dental hygiene, even with braces. Proper brushing and flossing are crucial for keeping your teeth and gums healthy throughout your orthodontic treatment.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT TOOLS

First, it’s important to select the right toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss. A toothbrush with soft bristles and a small head works best. You might also consider using an electric toothbrush for a more thorough clean. Choose a fluoride toothpaste to help prevent cavities, and use orthodontic-friendly floss or a floss threader to make flossing easier.

BRUSHING

STEP 1

STEP 2

Start by placing your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums.

STEP 3

Using a circular motion, brush your teeth gently.

STEP 4

Make sure that you brush all of the surfaces of each tooth, including the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces.

You should always use the tip of your brush when you brush the inner surface of your front teeth.

STEP 5

Take your time brushing, ensuring you remove all food particles and plaque from around your braces and teeth. This helps prevent cavities, gum disease, and decalcification (white spots on your teeth).

FLOSSING

Flossing with braces can be challenging, but it’s essential for removing plaque and food particles from between your teeth and along the gum line. Follow these steps:

Step 1: Start with an 18-inch piece of floss. Carefully thread it between your braces and wire. A floss threader can help make this process easier.

Step 2: Gently floss around your braces, being careful not to damage the wires or brackets.

Step 3: Floss around each tooth, reaching under the gum line to remove plaque and food particles.
