EMERGENCY CARE AT WILLIS ORTHODONTICS

At Willis Orthodontics, we prioritize patient care, especially in emergencies. Orthodontic emergencies are rare, but we are ready to help whenever you have trouble with your braces. Contact us if you experience severe pain, issues, or trauma to your teeth or braces.

HANDLING COMMON ISSUES AT HOME

Many problems can be resolved at home, though we are always available for appointments if needed. Here are some steps you can take to manage common issues:

  • Wire Falls Off: Place the wire in a bag until you can visit our office.
  • Irritation: Apply soft wax to any part of your braces that is sticking out and irritating your gums.
  • Wire Movement: Carefully use needle-nose pliers to move the wire back into place.

ADDITIONAL TIPS

Whether you can fix the problem or not, inform us about any issues. We may need to examine your braces to ensure they continue to function properly.

  • Saltwater Rinse: Rinse your mouth with a warm, saltwater solution (one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of warm water) to alleviate discomfort.
  • Orabase and Medication: Apply Orabase on sore gums for relief. Over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen (Tylenol) can also help. Avoid aspirin and NSAIDs like ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) or naproxen sodium (Aleve) as they can slow tooth movement.
  • Wax Application: Use wax to reduce irritation from new braces or loose appliances until we can address the issue.

SPECIFIC ISSUES

  • Loose Bracket: Leave a loose bracket in place and apply wax to prevent gum irritation. If it comes off, put it in a bag or envelope to bring to your next visit.
  • Loose Wire: Use tweezers or needle-nose pliers to place the wire back. If necessary, use floss to tie the wire into place until your appointment.
